Teachers told to be alert
President inaugurates Vaishnodevi varsity

The President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, today stressed the need for capacity building for development of the nation and said the strength of the country comes out of economic growth and the ability to defend itself. He was inaugurating the Mata Vaishnodevi University, near here, this morning.
He said the progress of the nation was strongly linked to an integrated approach to economic development and national security. Teachers could do extremely well if they kept their mind in a state of intellectual alertness through continuous research and teaching, he said. Guiding students in different research areas generated creativity and enhanced the quality of teaching, he added.
He said the 20th century was for generation of knowledge and the 21st century would be about the management of all knowledge and information we had generated and giving value to it. We must give our students the skills with which they could find a way through the sea of knowledge that we had created and continue with life-long learning, he stated.
The President stressed that we could teach ourselves by teaching others. The management of knowledge in the 21st century was beyond the capacity of individuals, he said. The management of knowledge must move out of the realm of the individual and into the realm of society, he added.
He said every student in college should learn to know how to use latest technologies for aiding learning. Colleges should equip themselves with adequate computing equipment, laboratory equipment, Internet facilities and an environment for students to enhance their learning abilities, he said.
Dr Kalam said the aptitude for entrepreneurship should be cultivated in the college environment. We must teach our students to take calculated risks for the sake of larger gain, he said. They should also cultivate a disposition to do things right, which would enable them to take up challenging tasks later, he added.
He said a three-pronged approach was essential to make the distance education programme viable and a successful proposition through the universal tele-education system to all remote parts of the country. The three components were connectivity, tele-education system and quality content generation and deployment, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor, Lt-Gen S.K. Sinha (retd), said the university would provide highest-quality technical education to enable its scholars meet the global challenge of the modern world. He said the university would promote knowledge in management sciences, information technology, biotechnology and Indian philosophy.
